where the writers are

Red Room Press

Based on sales of 1.6 books per week, for a total of 84 books in one year, at a cover price of $20 per book. Then you’ll be enjoying Red Room for free plus getting checks from us in the mail—there’s no downside.

The long-term value of collecting real customer contact information and data is priceless, since you can’t get it anywhere else and there are no better leads for your next book. And we haven’t raised the price of Premium Membership since launching these amazing programs. The thousands of new readers you’ll reach through Red Room, the beautifully designed online home, the supportive community, and our marketing efforts on your behalf on Red Room and beyond, were already worth the annual membership fee.
How can we carry so many titles in stock? Like many online retailers, we ship directly from distributors (this is how Amazon started). We’re working with the biggest distributor in the country, which supplies thousands of bookstores, including ours, so they keep even hard-to-find titles in stock and ready to ship same-day. We offer mostly traditionally published books, but we stock many self-published titles, too.
While we carry mostly traditionally published books, we stock many self-published titles as well. Most authors make an average of 10% royalties—after their advance is earned out—on their traditionally published books. We offer the only way for most authors to make more on these books. We’re not offering a new publishing model, we’re offering a new retailing model. When your book is purchased on Red Room, we pay you 15% of your book sales, in addition to what your publisher pays you. If you haven’t yet earned out your advance, we still pay you 15%. If your book was work for hire, we still pay you 15%. If your book is twenty years old but still in print, we still pay you 15%. Even if your publisher only pays you 7% on paperback sales, we still pay you 15%. We retail books so we can provide authors with more income. We’re the only retailer doing this, and it’s the only way most authors can make additional income on already published books.
You see a running total of your accumulated Royalties on your Red Room Dashboard, right next to your total book sales. Red Room calculates Royalties on a quarterly basis: January 1-March 31, April 1-June 30, July 1-September 30, and October 1-December 31 of each year. We’ll send you a check two to three weeks after the end of each quarter. Any balance of less than U.S. $50 in Royalties will be carried over to the following quarter—so you only get big checks. Royalties are unlimited, you make 15% even if you sell millions of books, and we hope you do.
Most retailers think the customers who buy your book are their customers, not yours. We retail books to help our authors connect with their readers. We notify you every time someone purchases your book. And you can create a custom thank you note that is automatically sent to anyone who buys your book.
Book-buyers are added to your list of Connections on Red Room under a special “Customers” category so you can contact them in the future. The result is a database of your book buyers—something only retailers usually have access to. Of course, if a reader chooses to opt-out of being connected, they can, but as of this writing, all of our shoppers have been delighted to be connected to the author of the book they purchased. Imagine if you had a list of every single person who bought your books over the years and how that would transform your marketing efforts on your next book!
There’s no limit on your Red Room Royalties!

The publishing house where authors' rights come first.
“Red Room Press understands what authors want from a publisher—better contract terms, more artistic control, and to write any length or genre. Authors need help with marketing and technology, and they’d like their work to get to market faster.”

- Ivory Madison, Red Room CEO and Editor in Chief

We publish quality fiction and nonfiction books and shorter-length works in electronic, print, and print on demand formats.
Terence Clarke, Red Room’s Director of Publishing, is a literary author and editor himself, and ensures that Red Room Press maintains both an uncompromising literary sensibility and the spirit of adventure to leverage new technologies to benefit authors.

Want to be published by Red Room Press?
Please contact us at: redroompress@redroom.com, and include a brief query, a link to your Red Room page, and the first 1,000 words of the writing you’d like us to consider, cut and pasted into the body of the email. We will not open attachments. Agents, printers, and other industry folks are welcome to contact us, too.

Want to become a book patron and support an exciting book project?
Red Room has pioneered a new economic model in which financial backers underwrite individual books and story projects, rather than the entire publishing company. Contact us if you’d like to get involved.

Red Room has long-standing relationships with thousands of traditionally published authors, including Nobel, Pulitzer, and Booker Award winners who have attracted millions of readers to Red Room.

These relationships, combined with access to technology assets and expertise no other publisher has—such as a social media platform with superior search optimization and an online bookstore that shares data with authors—gives Red Room Press a unique ability to take advantage of, and even define, the new opportunities transforming the publishing industry.

Join Red Room today and you'll be notified of books and projects published by Red Room Press.
