The saying that sticks and stones can break your bones but words will never hurt you, never lived in the real world. Words hurt more. They cut deeper and their memory remains forever. Words spoken are tough, words written are even tougher, words plastered across the internet and television are tougher still. The ability of the pen to make or break someone should be a power that is used only when all facts are in fact fact and not what “they” say.
Tonight I watched the Academy Awards. A room full of creative types giving each other accolades for doing the job that is their life. Each one is dressed in his and her best, each one is humbled for being in the company of others that are equally humbled. Each one looking to walk into the pot of gold and collecting the coveted academy awards. Each one needing to hear their colleagues say that was good. These people are millionaires, they can go anywhere and buy anything however the power of words helps to make the other stuff pail by comparison. They need to hear that they are loved and this makes them feel as if their chosen path means something to someone else. To be able to hear that they were nominated is enough to keep them going for another year or so.
What would we do for each other if we would just say we loved you when we felt the feeling. If we hugged our children more just because. The ability to inspire others by spoken words allows them to feel comfort, to feel trust and to believe that they can go on to the next challenge. Being loved is really all one needs to succeed. Love your children and they will love you back. Love is a choice, love is a decision, it is the way out of no way and is the light that guides my path. The words we choose to use or the words we choose not to use can make or break us. I choose to not be broken.
