I really don't know when I first heard the name "Benjamin Button"; but when my friend came back here from the US to spend the holidays with her family, she mentioned it to us and I got all the deja vu thing. It was first advertised at the States, of course, before it was known here in the Philippines just last month (or was it?). I had never taken any liking to the movie (by Brad Pitt) until I read the e-book with the same title.
The story was about a rich couple who gave birth to an "elderly" baby. Their son, Benjamin (whose birthname was different), was already a septuagenarian by birth. The family doctor and the whole hospital didn't want to get involved in this kind of raft thus they insisted to the Buttons to take Benjamin out of the hospital before it loses its reputation.
The father, who was in denial, tried to dress the old Benjamin with children's clothes and let him play with children's toys. Because he was old, he could not play very well because of his stiff hands but found refuge with his grandfather. The two elderly people sat and talked everyday as if they had known each other for a long time. But as Benjamin grew up in age, his physical features became younger and more prominent before. More problems for the Buttons arose when Benjamin started school. This went on until college.
When he was in his twenties (yet he looked like in his fifties by that time), he met a beautiful young woman who later on became his wife. In the book, he didn't tell his wife about his "case" and thus, she thought, he was being narcissistic when he became older and younger at the same time; while his wife lost her appeal and beauty as she aged.
This is one interesting story to read. Though the words and the flow of the story was light, you could see the problems Benjamin encountered as he grew older... especially when he already became a baby and all the memories he had were lost.
After I read this book, I asked myself, "What if there is such a case? How would this person feel?" Still, it lingered on my head. This story is a good one. Though, it is quite different from the movie, I think. I am not quite sure. Anyway, I would like to recommend people to read this one. I'm sure you would like it.
