This is my short play "God's Substitute," a glance at a rarely-remembered episode of William Shakespeare's life. In 1601, his acting company became entangled in the Essex Rebellion to overthrow Queen Elizabeth II. What were the consequences for Shakespeare? This mini-drama offers some tantalizing suggestions and debates. It is a slightly abridged version of a play from a my one-act collection, _Plays on Ideas 1_, which also includes such historical figures as Joan of Arc, William Jennings Bryan, Queen Christina, Clarence Darrow, René Descartes, and Sequoyah.
