Smoky received high honors in Australia this past year. July 20, '12. The Australian Defence Force Tracker and War Dog Association combat medal. and then the Bronze memorial at the Hospital. Dec, 12,'12 . I have a close correspondence with a lady whose late father was on Luzon with us at Lingayen (city) Gulf airfield as a Combat Amphibious Engineer. He was left behind when the Corps of Combat Engineers went with the infantry Div. to fight in Bagio 40 Miles away. Smoky saved him too because the planes moved to the strip while the culvert would have to have been dug up would have been duck soup for the Japanese who were bombing the strip every day. And 40 planes in row would be sitting ducks along the steel matting strip and this would have been too much for them to resist. The planes night and day fighters would have to be there to keep them operational. This would have been for an estimated 3 days of hand labor at the only taxiway we had to the protected area. The engineers were constantly patching the strip at the time to keep it operational.
