I was in my twenties during Watergate, and followed the hearings closely. So after watching the thugs in the current White House blatantly break the law for six years, I thought I knew what would happen when the Democrats won the House -- investigations would be undertaken and impeachment articles would be drawn up. Republicans would side with the president as long as they could, but when the administration's crimes were brought to light, they would find themselves unable to support the administration, just as their predecessors had in the Watergate scandal.
Then reality stepped in, in the person of Nancy Pelosi. After watching six years of concerted effort to undo our whole system of government, using the most blunt strong-arm tactics, without any regard for such niceties as honor, respect, or honesty, Ms. Pelosi decided the best way to deal with these thugs was to make nice with them.
I can only imagine that when she announced, "Impeachment is off the table," Karl Rove and his mob must've laughed until they wet themselves. They probably still laugh whenever they think about it.
I mean, consider what congress had to do to get hold of the Watergate tapes. Fighting Nixon's stonewalling all the way to the Supreme Court. And once they had the tapes, with proof that Nixon had broken the law by ordering a coverup of the Watergate break-in, the game was up. Republicans abandoned him and he resigned rather than face forcible removal.
Now consider the current situation. Congress doesn't need to subpeona anyone for evidence of law-breaking -- Bush has publicly confessed to repeatedly breaking the FISA statutes, and brags that he has no intention of stopping. He's handed the Pelosi the smoking gun, and she's said, in affect, "Thanks, but I'm not interested in enforcing the law, or any of that nasty checks-and-balances stuff. But I would like to take this opportunity to ask you very nicely to please obey the law, if you would."
By her refusal to uphold the law and defend the constitution, she has demonstrated that, like the Republicans, she took her oath of office purely as a formality, never paying any attention to the words she recited, and never intending to be bound by the oath.
And by so doing, she's encouraged the president to continue to do whatever he wants, completely unconcerned with the impotent bleating from the "loyal opposition."
If Bush does launch a military strike against Iran, Nancy Pelosi as the enabler-in-chief, will share responsibility.
As a San Franciscan (and thuse directly "represented" by Pelosi), I was delighted today to hear a political ad from a woman (who's name I didn't catch) who's running to take Pelosi's seat, on a simple platform of enforcing the law. I don't yet know anything about this woman, but unless she has some awfully huge and smelly skeletons in her closet, I suspect I'm going to work for her victory.
"All that's necessary for evil to succeed is for Nancy Pelosi to do nothing."
