***4 Stars   great hero, noir-ish detective work is fabulous

In author Janet Dailey's romantic suspense story, "Bannon Brothers: Trust", RJ Bannon is a police detective with a bullet permanently lodged in his back. On an extended medical leave after a drug bust gone bad, Bannon is bored, restless, and ready to get back on the job. However, when he still is not released for duty by his doctor, he has to file a continued claim for medical coverage, and so he must have insurance papers signed by the chief of police. While at the police station, Bannon decides to check in with his old pal Doris, who now has a new position as Case Files Manager. Killing time while waiting for the chief, Bannon offers to help Doris with designating old case files to be archived for digital storage. His decision to help his friend is one that will change the course of his life. He becomes intrigued by a decades-old missing child case in which a the three-year old daughter of a wealthy businessman was kidnapped and never found. The huge reward was never claimed, and the money has been held in trust, accumulating substantial interest throughout the years. The trust is about to expire, and the money will be returned to the girl's father, Hugh Montgomery. Due to serious financial losses, Hugh is desperate to recover the money. Bannon begins his own investigation into the kidnapping, and this is where the author really caught my reader's attention with deftly detailed detective work. I loved the noir-ish feel of the story line. Tough, but tender-hearted, detective has a sense of honor, a logical mind, and a great relationship with his two younger brothers, Linc and Deke. When Bannon meets beautiful artist Erin Randall, he falls real fast in a real big way. Erin is not immune to Bannon's charm and protectiveness, but it comes increasingly clear that she is somehow an unknowing link to the mystery surrounding the kidnapping, and they try to put their feelings for each other on hold until the case is solved. There is much humor in the story as well, with the author injecting some sharply observed truths in an entertaining manner. If you love good-guy detectives with a wry sense of humor, then you will greatly enjoy "Trust". Next in the series is "Bannon Brothers: Honor", featuring middle brother, Linc Bannon. The third book will be younger brother Deke's own story. Author Janet Dailey is a versatile storyteller--offering modern romantic suspense, classic romance, and thrilling historical westerns--always with her own unique style!

***4 Stars   low-key high-tech hero with much appeal

Author Janet Dailey continues her "Bannon Brothers" series with "Honor", featuring the middle brother, Linc Bannon. A top-level government operative whose expertise is technology and military programming development, Linc is a low-key, high-tech guy with the trademark Bannon dry wit. There isn't much in this world that he can't analyze, improve or reinvent, and he knows the right people to ask when he needs answers to his questions. The only thing in his life that has thrown him for a loop is one small woman, a petite powerhouse named Kenzie, a dog trainer who once specialized in K9 training for the US Army. Linc and Kenzie are "buddies", with a great teasing friendship that makes Linc long for a deeper involvement. Kenzie is also attracted to Linc, but trust issues from her past are making her wary of a romantic entanglement which could ruin a terrific friendship. Linc invites Kenzie to his brother RJ's wedding, and she declines, leaving him alone with his thoughts as he watches other couples mingle after the wedding. Later, sitting at a bar, nursing his yearning for Kenzie as he nurses a cold drink, Linc sees a newsflash on the bar TV that sends a jolt straight to his heart. A horrible accident scene is being shown, and Linc recognizes the mangled car as belonging to Kenzie. A furious race to find her and make sure she's all right ends with Kenzie being safe and the friend who borrowed her car in critical condition in the hospital ICU. When the wreck turns out to be much more than "accidental", Linc and Kenzie begin an intense investigation that soon has them spending a lot of time in each other's company. The deeper they dig into the cover-up involving the military equipment supplier where Kenzie's friend worked, the more involved their hearts become, and each begins to dream of a future together--if only they can survive the present! As with older brother RJ's story in "Trust", Janet Dailey once again gives us a very appealing hero with middle brother Linc Bannon in "Honor". I can't wait to read about rascally younger brother Deke when his own book is released!
