I switched from astrophysics to an English major because I was spending all my time writing. I then spent three years learning aikido in Kimitsu, Japan. I woke at 4 each day. In winter I watched my breath mix with the tea steam as I typed standing in front of my new Macintosh; in summer sweat dripped from my nose onto the keyboard and I left wet footprints on the tatami. My stories got me to Gainesville, where I did my Mostly Fooled Around and disappointed Padgett Powell, Harry Crews, and other great teachers by not publishing. Instead, I got hired as the writing coach for the Honors Program at Florida and teaching took the bulk of the next decade. Now I'm writing again and seeking community while I start a blog.
