We must stop the violence. Our leaders refuse so let's look to the young for new ideas, but workable ideas instead of doing the same thing over and over.
The old reasons for violence in Palestine are just weak excuses now. It's been 61 years since England had the idea of squeezing the Palestinians out of Palestine. Except for profiteers from violence no one in the Middle East, none of their neighbors, none of the pilgrims not even the tourists are doing so well.
For example, why are the Israeli's are so fearful of children sleeping with their parents during the night?
The Israeli's are so fearful they are bombing sleeping families with USA-made GB39 bunker buster missiles. On the other hand Israeli's are being bombed with homemade missiles.
In a 48 hour period starting Saturday and ending Monday the fatalities and injured are many and terribly unfortunate. On the Israeli side two people lost their lives, 14 were injured. Of the Palestinians 310 lost their lives, 1400 were injured.
Obviously there is no battle waging between two equally strong military forces. Yet the Israeli's are complaining and cowering with great energy in front of the media's cameras.
Over the years I've noticed that the threat of homemade bombs isn't omnipresent. In fact it's possible to just get up and leave the area, get up to visit some friends across town, fly to a vacation spot for a few days, or walk away for good so that the Palestinians can regain a portion of their motherland.
Destruction of homes, buildings and streets is taking place on top of Palestinians. Brave camera people are sending videos of the rubble that now has taken the place of a structured community. The videos can be seen where media powers permit it to be shown.
Those Palestinians whom the world calls refugees are living in their homeland yet they are some of the most vulnerable people in the world.
The Israelis have occupied the land of Palestine with the backing of Britain and the USA for several decades, literally pushing Palestinians out of their own homes and off their own land.
What is the purpose of this hyperbolic displacement and destruction now, this week?
During the first years the purpose was to facilitate Anglo American access to oil. But now people are turning to alternative energy sources.
One purported reason was that this particular portion of land was promised to Zionist's and other Jewish people comfortable with the Zionist's violent way of obtaining land. Yet God gave all of us land and gave the message that the land is sacred. He gave us all water and the water is also sacred.
If the reason is religious identity then it would make more sense for Jewish worshipers to live near the Ark of Covenant in Ethiopia. Why not work out a peaceful agreement with the Ethiopians?
Perhaps the reason behind all the fancy efficient weaponry is greed. As more missiles are used, more will be needed. Supply and demand. Rising profits. To the few members of the plutocracy, war, particularly unending war is desirable.
The plutocracy must be stopped. Surely there is at least one thing each of us can do to start the new year on a path towards peace and justice. Writing letters to government officials, sending opinion pieces to newspapers, letters to television and media pointing out the inaccuracies in their reporting, contributions for pharmaceuticals and food, supply a boat to move supplies to the Gaza Strip, demand environmental breathable air in Palestine (war is destroying the world as fast as any other activity),and so many other options. Only you can know what you can do best.
An intelligent young author and web editor named Ali Abunimah has made a most reasonable suggestion based on our past experience with South Africa. He suggests we use the tools of boycott, divestment and sanctions.
I agree that such actions might be our best hope to end the apartheid situation that has literally blown out of control in Palestine.
