I'll tell you a secret, although I'm a bit embarrassed. I haven't been out of the house for many days because of the strength of the sun. In August I usually spend most days at home due to both the sun's intensity and the large number of tourists.
August is the busiest month for tourists to Crete as this is the month generally taken for vacation in Greece. So many Athenian drivers arriving give me pause when driving in town is needed, they have some very aggressive driving habits and I don't want to get drawn into an outburst of road rage. Something that also embarrasses me is when I have a fit of road rage.
I used to be out next to the sea every day but this year I gauge the white intensity of heat before I decide to leave the house because I may end up with a miserable headache. Surely this is a passing ailment and in a year or two I except to be back on the beaches of Crete more often.
Evening is a different matter. If I'm able to rest a few hours during the day, evening is the time to leave the house.
Midnight is the most comfortable time of the day now that August is here in Chania,
Visitors from Hungary commented, "How odd that traffic is very slow until about ten o'clock at night, but after the main highway is congested and stays busy for several hours. In Hungary the roads are empty because we are all at home in bed!"
People that have the opportunity rest during the hottest part of the day so they can enjoy the night air. The temperature becomes more and more comfortable in the hours after sunset. ( . . . And what sunsets! A variety of gorgeous colors offer a new painting each evening created by the universe; maybe in celebration of the Cretan people who know how to take advantage of summer evenings full of conversation, good food, singing, dancing and relaxing.)

What´s the average
What´s the average temperature for summer there, Vicky?
Conversation, good food, dancing... at midnight. I´m moving to Crete. :-)
Hot weather!
I think that the average summer temperature might be between 27 to 33 degrees C.
The temperature and barometric pressure change throughout the day, very significantly. I've experienced rain at my house while at the same time my neighbor a block away has no rain! Because we are on the sea between two large continents the weather is very interesting! Also because Crete has 5 ecosystems from sea level to the mountains which also complicates my answer.
So the average temp I gave above is for my yard only! BUT on the first floor (2nd floor in the States) where we live we have nice breezes from the north often this summer. Even though the breezes start out with high temperature from the mainland or northern islands, as they travel over the sea, the sea absorbs heat. Wonderfully for us the breezes are pleasant by the time they reach our house!
Here's a weather site which I enjoy a lot when trying to understand the weather here!
