Thank you

I listened to the clip, and had never heard a white man be so honest about racism until I heard Tim Wise.  Thank you for what you are doing to bring awareness to a country that really do need to come together as one.  I am (what America says) an African America woman.  Actually, I don't use that any longer.  I am an American.  I have never been to Africa, no one in my family has ever been to African, nor was any of my family members born in Africa, and that is not to put Africa down, because I'm not.  It is just when you go to fill out any type of application, it asks you: Are you, White, Black (African American), and to be honest, I am none of those.  I am not black, because my skin color is brown, I am not African, but I am an American and I feel that if you are an American citizen, that is what you should be called. To me, that would bring equality.  Once again, thanks for your show of wanting equality in this nation.

You can call yourself African too.

Hi Susan,

If all you know about yourself is the places you have been to and the places where your family members were born, then you have to read your history. Being called "African-American" is one of the very few truths allowed you. You have to be proud of who you really are.

Comment Bubble Tip

I agree with you about the "African" thing

My family has been on this continent for at least 5 generations, and I own the term American.  I am proud of the Africans in my family tree, but if I call myself African American then every American should.

identity and skin color

What an interesting documentary by the author! Huhh

Thanks.

Hi Susan Causey, Indeed, your opinion is quite correct and I do understand you just as perfectly as I understand someone who reacted in an interesting manner to your message. He said if everything of your identity as an American has being taken by the whites, then you should be proud they spared you that historical identity of being called African American. Knowing what your African descendants did to build that country, it would rather be logical being identified more and more as African American rather than just American. It evokes memories of pain, (in joy), toil, hardwork, development and history in general. Refuting that Africanness of the story may seem avoiding an important part in the history of that great nation your great fathers toiled for.I understand you have nothing to do with Africa neither has any of your family members something to do with it , at least for now, but the  born and bread Chinese Americans and Hispanic Americans hardly feel their Americaness without that Hispanic or Chinese part. But most of black folks want to feel the Americaness devoid of the Africaness. As an Anthropologist, I do get the point he's trying to make, though practically and in a race-sensitive nation like the US, such utterances may stir commotion than jubilation especially amongst  some American who happen to be black, brown or whatever..I for one, do not cherish human tags! But if that HAS to be, then all humans in the USA should be tagged, beside African Americans, there should be European Americans, Hispano-American Chinese Americans and of course the “American Americans” (you know those I'm talking about). May their souls rest in perfect peace- Amen!Isn’t it time to get a general name for the white Americans that might match that appellation Afro, Chinese or Afro Americans?  All is just a question of identity. Who are the Americans? Thank youEmmanuel

Wow I am pleasantly suprised.

Thank you for speaking the truth on race matters.

This is helpful.  You are so right about the divide and conquer tactics used by the elite.

Is it difficult to give up the illusion of superiority for people of European descent?  How does that happen?

Good talk

Very couragious to say these things at this time. We have to acknowledge its hard to swalow these truths. I think the world is shrinking and soon, not only the concept of our skin color will become obsulete, but also these borders which have come to define us, and has put nationalist againts each other. This man is finding the road to a new humanity.

Where does the term African-American come from? Where does the term Black come from? Where does the term Negro come from? Where does the term Nigger come from? It comes from an entire race of people who have no sense of identity. "All" people derive from Africa. Should every nationality have an African preface? Of course not. We, as a people, are still lost. Our history has been taken away from us and there is no way for us to get it back. I admire this man's courage for speaking about things open that Black people have speaking about behind closed doors forever. Will it help anything, who knows. One thing is for sure - it certainly can't hurt.

TIM WISE

I wholly agree with keithfromtrenton re: our real human roots.  Also, Tim Wise brings an entirely different perspective on the basis of racism. I am deeply grateful to him for that important slice of education to which most folk are not privy.  For a white person to speak so candidly about race  - in a pro-Black sense - could place him in an uncomfortable position in this country,  to say the very least.  God bless and protect him for his bravery. I am certain there must be others of our white friends who have similar awareness but who count the cost too dear to speak up or to give support to such free (?)  thought and earnest thinking though based on historical fact.   Nevertheless, I sincerely hope those persons who are in a position to motivate and influence a wide range of others will read this.  However, anyone of us can do what we can from within our own limited sphere of influence to cast light on such a grave issue.

Comment Bubble Tip

We know who we are

I also dream of an ideal situation where all humans are simply humans and there is no need for further classification or stratification, because we are all Gods children. However until that day comes, when we don't need to say, Asian, or Caucasian, or black, until that day when we don't need to say Italian-American, German-American, until that day comes, I will be African-American. And please dont make the assumption that black people are the those with out an identity. An attempt to call us black is just a new one to obliterate our identity. If you are an African-American, that is what you are. That is the identity you should reseach if  are ignorant of it. Until you know who you are, accept it and elevate it, you will always be what the racists wants you to be; a non-entity. A man refusing to stand up for his own.

I personnaly believe he makes a lot of sence. In everything we have to have disticntion to separate and to be able to recognize one thing from another(person). So whats up with the color thing that does'nt make a difference to anyonelse but the white man. This was God's doing in the beginnig to be able to recognize his works without mistakes.Blacks  has always been known to be the minority, but when you think of it there are more blacks than whites all over the world. that makes us the majority, but it would not help us until we can get together in unity and takie our place in a world that has been so long denied.

Tim Wise On the Creation of Whiteness

As I have listened to what was said in the clip concerning the Creation of Whiteness, and KNOW what the Word of God states; for in the Bible are ALL things that pertain to Life AND Godliness.

1 Peter 5:8 (King James Version)states: Be sober, be vigilant; because YOUR  adversary, the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.

Old trick, just packaged differently.  Truth is: we have an adversary, the DEVIL...not the white man, not the black man, not the red man, not the yellow man, not the woman, or anybody else.  We actually have an enemy whose job it is to "set traps" (as he has from the Beginning of time) so that folk will step into the snare of the fowler and become a victim. "As a roaring lion" is speaking of his hunting tactics, how he seeks and finds his meals.  Now there are some that he will be able to devour, and some that he will not be able to.  The word "may" means that one must give their permission for him to do so.  People are NOT the problem, satan is.

This is satan's resume according to John 10:10 ..."The thief (the devil, satan) COMETH NOT BUT FOR to steal, and to kill, and to destroy:  I am come (Jesus speaking) that they might have life, and have it more abundantly."

All of this is dependent upon you allowing satan into the doorway of your mind/heart.  And how do you do that?  Anything done outside of the will of God provides an open door for all kinds of havoc to enter into our lives.  And yes, this is a "personal" thing.  Now that is the truth.

the whiteness thing

i could never understand why white folks could not just see their whiteness as another color in the greatness of all the races.  i am a black woman married to a white man. our kids are then beige, or tan.  what makes whites think that they are the best when 90% of the world is of color?  could it be that they are so outnumbered that they are scared of being in this wonderful mix? why? what makes them live in that mindset?  sorry! black people are not going away. yellow people have the economy. brown people are taking care of your food.  i'm just saying to point these things out. maybe they should be nicer. maybe they should get a grip. maybe it would save a great deal of problems if they come to terms with being members of the spectrum. just a thought because we are all in this planet thing togeather. that mars project to move rich white people off earth is not going to happen for a very long time. regular, everyday  white people will still be here with the rest of us.  deal!!!!!!!

racism

I am a Black American that has independently studied ancient African history for over 20yrs. I deplore the term African American. It doesn't distinguish Black Americans from the racist White's that practiced Apartheid in South Africa, fled its dismantling, settled in America and became citizens. Since they were born and raised in Africa, they have more right to be called African than any of us American born Blacks.  Thus the term African American does not adequately denote the race of the individual calling him/herself African American. We should use the terms Black Africans, Black Americans, Black Europeans, Black Caribbeans, Black Asians etc.

I have been so enlightened by my independent studies that I have truely broken the psychological chains that were placed on me, and all of us, by the very mentality Tim Wise is talking about. Because of my awakening, and the influence I've had on my mother, she has established a Black History museum that shows the worldwide influence Ancient Black Africans have had on the establishment of ancient cultures thoughout the world. For example: the 1st Chinese and the first 2 Chinese dynasties, the Xia and Shang, were established by Black Africans. The 1st, so called, Europeans were primitive Black Africans called Grimaldi(Europe, although it has historically and erroneously been called a continent, is not, nor has it ever been a continent by definition). The ancient Greek and Roman cultures were also established by Black Africans. In fact, Paris was named after an ancient African Goddess called Par Isis,  who was worshipped by the Black African founders of Rome, the Etruscans. Every ancient Christ figure, including Jesus, was originally portrayed as Black and having wooly hair, especially the sixteen cruxified saviors(Jesus is #16).

NEVER FORGET, KNOWLEDGE IS POWER,  AND NO CULTURE CAN HIDE AND/OR DENY THE TRUTH UNLESS IT ALREADY KNOWS THE TRUTH.

I agree with Susan from

I agree with Susan from Indiana, I also feel that the term "African American" is not what people who are AMERICAN and happen to be BLACK should have tacked on them, because it is a label and it is a way to keep track of us, I AM AN AMERICAN!!! I pay taxes like everyone else, I sing the National Anthem, I have pledged allegiance to the flag, I have fought wars that technically had nothing to with me, but did it because I am an AMERICAN and because the same government that ignores me wanted me to,I consider myself BLACK, even though technically my complexion can range from Jet black, to ivory pink. This country is built on hypocrisy, as soon as our "forefathers" wrote the lie, "ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL" is where it began in my opinion, they called slaves  chattel and regarded them as nothing more than animals for their personal gain, but all of these highly educated, well read men KNEW that these slaves were HUMAN but just "twisted" it enough to sleep better at night. Another thing that perplexes me is how people claim they are Christians in one breath and grumble about "too many nig*ers moving in our community" in the next. If you believe in God, you should know that he KNOWS everything in our hearts and minds, and he is EVERYONE'S GOD, we just have different names for him.!! Racism is so alive and well in this country, that we might as well make it a Holiday, hell, we celebrate it on a day to day basis, but most do it quietly, privately...good heavens if you speak what you think/feel out loud, it's just not politically correct, PUH-LEEZE!! We are ALL PREJUDICED TO A DEGREE, but no one wants to admit it, I want to get along with all people, I would like for all nations to get along also, we do not have any alternative but EARTH at this point, so WE HAVE TO GET ALONG, plain and simple. My dad's brown skinned, my mother mulatto, and I am somewhere in between,I embrace my BLACKNESSS, I embrace my  CHOCTAW/INDIGINOUS PEOPLE HERITAGE ,I embrace my WHITENESS,and whatever else is thrown in.

I think that Time Wise is right on target.  I have heard him speak on at least two occasions.  He is pulling back the covers on white supremecy.   Also, I have been to Africa three times.  Seperately, any black person who claims they are NOT African simply because they never been there are in denial and need enlightenment.   It would go a long ways to help us understand our situation here.

Tim Wise: The Pathology of Privilege

I enjoyed the video and to hear a white man or I should say to hear a good man tell the truth about things.  This helps me in my thoughts about white people.  There are some good white people, who look at people as people not as what color they are.  Of course they are few and a lot of the time they are hated by their own.  This I have seen personally.  It will be a good thing when people can transcend above the race thing.  When we can look and love each other as people, not what race or color you are.

Comment on some comments made regarding Tim Wise speech

I personally thought Mr. Wise's speech was very profound and timely. My comment is regarding some comments made by three commentators to his talk regarding the 'Creation of Whiteness'. Somebody should tell Kensdobs, Sixfthoneybrown, and Susan from Indiana that the term "African" is a noun and a specific ethnic designation regarding the genetic and geographic origins of a people whose genetic characteristics were 'naturally selected' from their environment. The term 'Black' is an adjective that is sometimes used as a 'symbol' for a person of African descent. There are black-skin people in India who are darker in complexion than most African Americans but they are Indians or 'East Indians', they are not Africans. There are a black skined, indigenous people in Australia generally called Australian Aborigines, they are not Africans. The list keeps going in Nepal, Peru, etc. But the 'Blacks' in Jamaica are the Africans in Jamaica, the 'Blacks' in Brazil are the Africans in Brazil (over 65 million and the largest African population outside of Africa), the 'Blacks' in Haiti are the Africans in Haiti, the 'Blacks' in Canada are the Africans in Canada, and the 'Blacks' in the United States are the Africans in the United States. Get it! In the United States we are not talking about C hinese Americans (they don't refer to themselves commonly as Yellow Americans), not about Native Americans (they don't refer to themselves commonly as Red Americans), not about Mexican Americans (they don't refer to themselves commonly as Brown Americans), but African Americans. I have no problem with the use of the term 'Black American', I just know that it is not a real ethnic or racial designation. It is just a symbol that African Americans used mostly in the 1960s and 1970s in order to reverse the negative image and symbolism that White Americans had for African Americans in their use of the term "Black".

A European American or White American who is racist toward 'Blacks' is not anti-black (he loves his black car, or her black fur coat, etc.), they are anti-African.

So Kensdobs, Sixfthoneybrown, and Susan from Indiana! Get with it! Your logical analysis of what you racially think you are is juvenile. The way you talk, people may mistakenly think that you are what Carter G. Woodson called the ''mis-educated Negro'' or what is commonly known today as "a person who has contempt for themselves as an African people".

STRAIGHT AHEAD!

Comment Bubble Tip

Black humans are different from Black objects

I believe racism targets black humans and not black objects. Hence it can be presumed wrong stating that a white who hates a black person can not per se be considered racist because he equally loves his black car and suit etc etc.

Just an observation

Emmanuel

I TRULY BELIEVE THAT TIM WISE CAN INITIATE INSTITUTIONS THAT WILL GUIDE AFRICAN AMERICANS IN A DIRECTION THAT WILL PUT THEM IN A MUCH MORE POSITIVE MENTAL STATE OF MIND. BUT WE MUST ALSO REMEMBER THAT KNOWLEDGE IS POWER AND SLAVES WERE POWERLESS SO WE MUST STRATEGICALLY FIGURE OUT WAYS TO TRICK THOSE WHO WOULD HAVE THEIR EYES POLKED OUT IF THEY WERE CAUGHT READING, OR GET THEIR TOUNG CUT OFF FOR TEACHING SOMEONE TO READ. I PRAY TO GOD THAT HE MAKES SURE TIM WISE MESSAGE TOUCHES WHITE PEOPLE AND MOST OF ALL HUMBLE THEM FOR THE PAIN THEIR ANCESTORS CAUSED TOWARD A WHOLE RACE OF PEOPLE WHO STILL SUFFER FROM THE BLOW SLAVERY DELIVERED. LET'S RAISE SOME MONEY, CREATE AWARENESS, AND HUMBLE THE PEOPLE THEN WE MIGHT ALL BE TREATED EQUAL. MARCUS GARVEY SAID... Awesome

I was first intoduced to Tim Wise watching a recent documentary.  I did not know his name but heard his truths, passion and love for humanity.  So refreshing ...so welcomed.  To acknowledged the truth from anothers world view is so rare.  Many of us have never heard someone else that does not look like us validate our truth and world vision.  From so many we hear "well I just do not think that ....(fill in the blank)...is really racist" when it is white on black but can see it so "Jerimiah Wright"  clearly clearly when it is black on white.    Tim Wise has 20/20 vision.  Glad to call him my fellow human being ...my brother of truth.  Much of the division could end by simple acknowledgement and validation of each other.  The fight is for truth not distruction of each other!

Thank you for your words of truth.  I agree with a lot of what people are posting about this clip.  Someone mentioned that our identity was taken away, and that is a correct statement.  If I may, I'd like to suggest to those truly wanting to learn about who we are as a people(so-called black people), to do a little research.  Part of the problem is that we really don't know who we are.  For those who don't know, the Bible is true black history.  The history of who we are did not begin in Africa.  Although our true identity was hidden from us, we do not have to remain in the dark.  The answers of who we are can be found in the Scriptures.  Not only does it show us who we are, but why we are in the condition we're in as a nation of people.  And no, this not about some religion or one race against another, it's about truth.  Do a google search on Hebrew Israelites.  The truth is out there, if you really want it.

Thanks again Mr. Wise for speaking such profound truth.

Wow! I just saw this.

I hate to bring up this narcissist, but when the Rev,. Wright controversy was going on regarding "a country and culture controlled by rich White people", many Whites said that is was racist. They were, again, alligning themselves with these rich Whites because they are White. This country IS contolled by rich White people, and always has been. They are still masters at "divide and conquer" and always have been because it works!

While we are bickering with each other about Rev. Wright, Halliburton is moving thier HQ to Dubai. (remember the ports deal?) White and Black folks are losing thier homes and jobs.

We have sold our ENTIRE manufacturing sector to COMMUNIST China. Just think about that. Homeland security hs nothing to do with Al Quaeda. We're widening the Panama Canal so that we can ship in more barges of everything we use from COMMUNIST China, and we trust THEM to make goods and clothing for us to put on our bodies? Unpatriotic? Anyone that puts the entire US population at risk is treasonous. Divide and conquer keeps us from paying attention.

Pathology of Privilege

I am a PhD student and researching and writing on social change relative to education. I truly appreciate the honesty, because as a college student at the University of Houston, I participated in civil rights here in Houston on the campus and in the city. Additionally, I broke barriers in the Aetna Life & Casualty on a countrywide basis as being the first black female underwriter. I subsequently was transferred from Houston for my protection because of threats made on my life. However, while you speak on the plight of the white racism that still exists,  I don't think that it will ever leave. However, such levels of racism exists within the black community. In many arenas the slave mentality still exists and we tend to allow it to permeate throughout our own activities against each other. I have experienced many situations where I could not blame white racism, but it was black racism, classist mentality, and an overall lack of brotherhood.

I have been in the area where you speak of many times, and know the level of mentality that exists. It not only exists there, but along the Gulf Coast.

Your honesty of how things still are, are greatly appreciated. I am going to share this with many friends. Thanks so much. Lillie

I'm of African decent and have similar concepts. The realization of self ( Negro,Black,White, etc.) is explained as merely a mental devise, in a play we're looking to put on film Harlem 60 is one example. I copyrighted it in 1972 and since updated it. On our Sueseecar page at Blackplanet we have a poem you may like to hear. The main comment about Mr. Tim Wise I have to make; is,. I've met people who looked white; but, did'nt think of themselves as separate, they were not American. This is the first time I've heard who I presume to be an American so-called white person realize the same thing. I am so elated that someone had the courage to speak the truth in regard to the psychology of the evils of mankind. It has been a work in progress for millions of years. Whether it be race, color, religion,or class it has been used to maintain control. The group who desires power must create an illusion of constant fear, and anxiety, against another group. In the USA it is color, and class. Whites against Blacks, Rich against the Poor. Wake up people we are all Adam and Eves children; Gods children. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.  I am so glad that you are speaking the truth. I am 50 years old and for the first time in my life I hear a white man tell the truth and it really bring me to a place of some kind of freedom or release.  The Race card seperates and keeps us seperate.  we have got  to get pass black and white and realize that we are the United States of America.  My grandfather was a white man and my grandmother was a black woman, and I am a proud black woman, but it does hurt when the Whites of this country want to act as though we should thank the white man for bringing us over from Africa (Pat Buchanan).  there are many black Americans that are mixed and whites does not acknowledge it.  For example Barack Obama is mixed, yes he is a black man but he is just as much white as he is black.  Yes he looks like a black man and he excepts that he is black, but if he feels like i do, we don't and can't hate white people because that's part of our heritage. We might hate what we go through as many black american's do.  I have always been proud of being a Black American. But if a black person talk about race they are racist.  so i am glad you are talking about race because as long as we cover it up, there will be a race problem.  Talking about the truth of it will help to get past where we are. A lot of people can not get past it because people act like it didn't happen. I am not saying that we need to have a long dialouge about it but white people need to know that Obama talking about it is the best thing that a President can do for this country is to be able to understand both sides. on the other hand I think Clinton can't get pass the race card and that will be her downfall . Thank you so much Mr. Tim Wise. May God Bless you.
