My editor responded to me last night, saying she was probably not the right person to edit my book. She was a career copy editor, so it was her business to correct errors and punch up sentences. She had no expertise in content and structure, and I need a structural editor to transform 50,000 words into 80,000 words without harming the story that is already there. Perhaps, being a POD house, they assume what they are getting is second rate stuff, so that is how they treat it. I don't know. I'm not saying I KNOW that my work is first rate, but I believe in it strongly enough to think it shouldn't be copy edited just coming in the door.
Anyway the upshot is that she referred it to two other editors. I don't know that they will be any better, but maybe one of them will like it well enough to at least do justice to it.
