5) Vong Co (Nostalgia of the Past), Nguyen Thanh Thuy. This classical musician plays the Vietnamese instrument called the dan tranh, which is a kind of plucked zither. You can find her on YouTube, and her album “Doc Tau Dan Tranh” is well worth hunting for. Listen to the previous rock-and-roll songs, your head buzzing, and when you come to this it’s like slamming on the brakes while driving at 90 m.p.h. and shifting into reverse. You are literally transported into another universe. This is the piece I listened to when my characters briefly drop out of the war and go to an isolated village in the countryside. It is an opening into another culture.
