If I’m being totally honest my favourite detective has to be Inspector Clouseau. NOT the Steve Martin version I hasten to add. But the original as performed by the one and only Peter Sellers. Maybe you have to be British to really get the humour but to my mind there is nothing funnier than an Englishman who is pretending to be a Frenchman asking a busker in the street whether he has a ‘lie-sence’ for his ‘minkey’. But, yes, I know, this is not a movie web site, so Clouseau won’t wash. And I’m not going to nominate Sherlock Holmes, either, even though I read and re-read Conan Doyle throughout my childhood. So I’m going to opt for Inspector Montalbano by Andrea Camilleri. I’ve read the entire series (10 in all I think) over the past year or so. I love the humour and the way, even in the middle of a terrible murder investigation, Montalbano will take the time to sit in his favourite trattoria and eat a plate of spaghetti with sea urchin followed by a grilled turbot. Aaah to be Italian!
