“Changing a line or playing with a sentence can alter the meaning and tone of a poem. We will write new poems and consider how certain poems use the arrangement of lines and sentences for evocative, effective writing, with model poems by writers like Nikky Finney, Sterling Plumpp, Aracelis Girmay, and Lucille Clifton,” says Cave Canem fellow Tara Betts, whose debut collection is Arc and Hue, has been featured at the Dodge Poetry Festival. The ninety-minute master class will conclude with a question and answer session.
Betts, a Chicago native was named one of Essence magazine’s 40 Favorite Poets, sharing company with poets Lucille Clifton, Gwendolyn Brooks and Tracey Smith. Martin Espada says, “Tara Betts is a poet who pays exquisite attention to the world. It’s high time the world repaid the favor.” Betts will join poet Terrance Hayes for an evening reading and discussion at ”A Promise of Poetry,” followed by a question and answer period, at 7:30 pm on Wednesday, October 5, 2011 in the Monteabaro Recital Hall. A reception, book sale and signing will follow. Hayes won the 2010 National Book Award for his 4th poetry collection Lighthead. Of Hayes poetry, Cornelius Eady has said: "First you'll marvel at his skill … his brilliant turns of phrase. Then you'll notice the grace … the unblinking truth-telling just beneath his lines, the open and generous way he takes in our world."
