Under the Freedom Tree, my free-verse picture book on the contraband slaves of the Civil War, doesn't hit bookstores until February. But Publishers Weekly offered a sneak peek of the cover art in an article this week about indie booksellers gathering at the offices of Charlesbridge, Freedom Tree's publisher.
In a photo accompanying the article, Charlesbridge art director Susan Sherman is seen showing off a scan of illustrator London Ladd's painting, with the final jacket design on the wall next to her. Gorgeous!
I'm so grateful to London, Susan, and all the wonderful, caring folks at Charlesbridge who've made this book a joy to work on and truly beautiful to behold. Hope readers will find Under the Freedom Tree meaningful.
