Author, educator, consultant, and Simple Saturday blogger Debbie Gonzales wrote a beautiful post about Under the Freedom Tree, my forthcoming free-verse picture book about the contraband slaves of the Civil War. I'm so grateful!
Deb also created an amazing education guide for use with the book. The guide features pre- and post-reading discussion questions, historical sequencing and matching manipulatives, and compare/contrast and storytelling activities appropriate for grades 2-4. It's full of fun ideas to get students thinking about the people, places, and events in Under the Freedom Tree, which publishes next month from Charlesbridge, as well as the various techniques illustrator London Ladd and I used to convey the contrabands' powerful story.
Thanks so much, Deb—you rock!
