What kind of mother would tell her five-year-old, "Don't interrupt me unless your eyes are bleeding"?

Probably, a parenting book will advise you that it's not a good idea to threaten a child. Yet I, with my fancy-schmanzy advanced degree (in education, no less) and my years in the classroom, was heard to utter this and other such soul-damaging warnings. More than once. To this day, I still wonder if my daughter bears hidden emotional scars.
