I can’t discuss the merits of other organization’s conferences, but I’ve been to several presented by the Cat Writers’ Association, and I can say that they have all been, well, the cat’s meow.
Full disclosure: I’ve been both treasurer and president of CWA so there may be some bias in my opinion, but I don’t think there’s much. As I’m always telling anyone who will listen, the conference is about writing, not cats. Oh, sure, there’s generally a veterinary panel and maybe one other pet-related topic, but since there are two seminar tracks running concurrently, you can always skip those.
So, what other topics get discussed? Well, in 2010 these seminars were offered: “To Blog or Not to Blog,” “How to Query an Editor,” “Using Analytics to Measure your Reach,” “Book Publishing Choices,” “Is Facebook Really your Friend?” “A Look at the Inspirational Marketplace,” and “Webcasting your Expertise.” And that was just day one!
The conference also offers time to see old friends and make new ones because almost every meal is included in the price of the conference. That means continental breakfast Friday morning, an afternoon snack, Friday night dinner, Saturday full breakfast, lunch and dinner. If you arrive early and help to stuff the “goodie bags” you get pizza.
On top of all of this, there are editor and agent appointment. Sign up for the full conference and the price includes three 15-minute sessions with your choice of editors and agents. While the editors might be with pet-related publications, the agents represent a wide variety of writing genres.
The price for all this? For a non-member, $150. You can hardly get two-days’ worth of meals for that price, never mind seminars by experts. The conference location moves around the country and is generally held in November. For more information, check out the website, www.catwriters.org. Or, leave a comment. I’m always happy to promote this purrfect conference.
