Is Angelina Jolie pregnant with twins? Why do I want to know? Why are some of us so interested in the lives of celebrities? Celebrity: a famous person. Renown. Hero, luminary, notable. I guess I want to be a luminous, notable hero of renown and fame. Is that it?
Some people are rising stars. What about falling stars? Oh, no. I won't mention Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton. Paris is more of a whimpering star.
It's ridiculous, this celebrity mongering, and I'm hooked. Maybe it's because I love the movies. Today is the Academy Awards festival where our mythic folk come down from Olympus. I have to watch. I love the fashion. Those dresses, those hair-dos walking the red carpet. When I get together with my friend Kim, we always have the Hair Conversation. Followed by the Death Conversation. We write poetry. The Death Conversation is stock-in-trade. Yeats said, "For the serious poet, the subject matter is love and death." Or did he say sex and death? I should look it up, but I'm too busy trying to find out if Angie is pregnant or not. With twins, no less. That will be six children for the Jolie-Pitts. All I have is a cat. Boo hoo. Maybe I'm jealous. I want a gorgeous spangled dress, perfect hair, fame, renown, luminosity, six children, two nannies, and a body like, like...Angelina Jolie's. I'm thinking possibly nada on wanting her lips, too big, but then I look at them again, and sans the red lipstick, they're looking pretty darn good. Do I want Brad? Is this question rhetorical?
Now that you know how shallow I am, you'll never read this blog again. You most likely don't anyway. I'm not famous. I'm a falling, whimpering star that hasn't risen yet. Let me see if I can even get out of this essay with a little something for you even if you're not reading this. What's the most important thing here?
My hair. Should I cut it shorter or grow it longer? "We die and are put into the earth forever." (poet Jack Gilbert's line.)
I'm going to grow it. Just like Angelina's.
