For those who don't have all the background, here is the story of the fight that led to KidThree's shooting.
KidThree and another girl, FriendR, were walking from FriendR's grandmother's house to a nearby bus stop. Along the way, they saw another girl they knew having an argument with her boyfriend (this out on the sidewalk). This other girl, I can't call her "Friend-something" as she wasn't KidThree's friend (although she was friends with FriendR), was apparently putting on quite a show, so I'll call her NastyGirl. A group of young men was watching the fight; they were in the front yard of a house belonging to a grandmother of one of them. We'll call them "The Home Team," as the fight took place on their turf.
So. NastyGirl was fighting verbally with her boyfriend, much to the amusement of the Home Team. The Home Team started harassing the boyfriend, telling him to smack NastyGirl for using the language she was using towards him.
Boyfriend couldn't smack NastyGirl, as it was against the street code for a boy to hit a girl. He left to go to his home nearby to get his sister to fight NastyGirl, as girls can fight girls. That would restore Boyfriend's street cred.
***Side note: Unbeknownst to KidThree, NastyGirl had previously had a 'romantic relationship' with a member of the Home Team, thus the Home Team's enjoyment of and encouragement of the argument between NastyGirl and her boyfriend.
The Home Team continued harassing NastyGirl, who started yelling back at the group of them, and at her 'former friend' in particular. KidThree and FriendR were a little down the block, having decided this was better than tv and they wanted to see what was going to happen. They also figured NastyGirl might get attacked by someone and need some female back-up.
One of the Home Team turned a hose on NastyGirl, missing her mostly but getting her a little bit.
NastyGirl got even angrier and got on her cell phone, calling her brothers to come defend her.
One of the Home Team got on HIS cell phone to call friends to come back them up.
NastyGirl's brothers (two half-brothers to her and another half-brother to those two) arrived in two vehicles, along with three other people. We'll call them "The Visitors," as they were not on their home turn.
***Side Note: NastyGirl also had a 'romantic relationship' with her half-brothers' half-brother, thus his 'incentive' to join his brothers in defending their sister.
The Home Team and the Visitors started yelling at each other. At some point here, reinforcements arrived on foot for the Home Team but didn't join in. The fight escalated for a bit until two of the Visitors brandished weapons. One of the Home Team raced into his grandmother's house and got a gun, then gave it to another member of the Home Team.
Someone fired the first shot. Most likely it was one of the Visitors, but it could have been the Home Team dude with their gun.
KidThree and FriendR were terrified by this time, wanting to run but afraid that if they ran, someone would shoot them. They were near a truck and were moving, unobtrusively, to get behind it.
The Home Team member with the gun fired back (?) at the Visitors, then there was a fusillade from the Visitors towards the Home Team.
By this time, Boyfriend had returned without his sister, who wasn't home, and FriendR's younger brother came racing up on his bicycle, wanting to see if his sister was in danger.
KidThree was struck during that fusillade. We think it was one of the Visitors who shot her, but it could have been the Home Team member with the gun.
The Visitors dove into their cars, dragging NastyGirl with them, and sped out of there.
FriendR was hysterical, trying to get KidThree to stand up; KidThree knew she had been hit but couldn't figure out why she couldn't stand up and then why she couldn't breathe. She was conscious all throughout, from the shooting to the arrival of the ambulance and police and through the ambulance ride to the hospital. I won't describe that part--it is her story. Suffice it to say, it was awful to listen to later.
The two young men who just stood trial were from the Home Team--the one who ran into his grandmother's house to get the gun and the other who shot the gun (that was the one who had the previous relationship with NastyGirl).
I don't understand why the Visitors weren't charged.
My understanding of the charges against the two Home Team members was that it didn't matter who fired the shot that hit KidThree, under the gang laws all were equally culpable because all were participating in a gang fight.
Both were found Guilty on All Counts and are facing prison terms of twenty-five years to life. Sentencing will be mid-November.
Stupid young men.
Use a gun, go to jail.
Your companion had the gun? You're going to jail.
You didn't mean to shoot that person? You're going to jail.
You didn't know the gun was loaded? You're going to jail.
You were aiming at someone else? You're going to jail.
You just had the gun to scare someone? You're going to jail.
You just drove the getaway car? You're going to jail.
You only had the gun for protection? You're going to jail.
Use a gun, go to jail.
There's a pattern there: Guns=Jail. It's not hard to remember.
I'll shut up here, but don't forget, Use a Gun, Go to Jail. And I won't write to you.
