I heard on the radio this morning that the Consulate General of Japan here in San Francisco had set up an account under that name at Union Bank to accept donations to the Japanese Red Cross. The spot said you could donate in person at a Union Bank branch, or mail CHECKS, not cash, to the bank.
I went to a nearby Union Bank branch, got a deposit slip and in the customer name section wrote "Consulate General of Japan," and gave it to the teller. It worked like a charm. She found the account and gave me a receipt for my donation.
For those of you who want to donate directly to the Japanese Red Cross but maybe stopping by a Union Bank branch isn't convenient, here is the address to a branch here in San Francisco:
Union Bank, 1675 Post St, San Francisco, CA 94115.
That is the branch in Japan Center, which I thought was fitting. Make the checks out to "Consulate General of Japan."
In a lovely bit of coincidence, the teller who took my donation this morning was of Japanese descent.

This branch is in Japan
This branch is in Japan Center, across from where my daughter lives, where we personally have an account there and have been a customer since 80's. Thank you for your advise! I will be in San Francisco in two weeks.
