I received a funny e-mail today -- at least I thought it was funny. At the same time, it would be cool if it were to happen. The outfitter that I went with when Ralph and I climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro last January, Tusker Trails, is extending an invitation to Barack Obama to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. They gave a list of reasons, including that it would bring some positive attention to Africa (particularly Tanzania) and perhaps some help with Africa's challenges.
Although climbing Kilimanjaro is a difficult thing to do, Obama might enjoy the opportunity for a different kind of challenge. Certainly it would be less stressful than working on his campaign for the presidency. I'd like to see hiking, backpacking, and mountain climbing get the attention they deserve -- because these are activities that are of great benefit to participants. If Obama climbed Kilimanjaro, the stories that I am writing about my adventures on the mountain would be eagerly sought out. That would be cool, too, because I enjoy inspiring people to hike!
