Akhil is an institution! Every body speaks about Akhil every where in the campus because footprints of Akhil could be found every where in one form or the other. For the new teacher, discovery of Akhil was distinct from the rest of the students. She took her own time to get to know each one of them. Akhil was just another obscure face in the crowd, managing to evade her notice, silence being his cover.
It was revision time atlast for the forth coming Semester examinations. The new teacher found Akhil's english class work note book in another section and it was duly returned. He had been searching for it for 8 days and always put up a worried expression when ever the teacher asked him to write in class work note. When warned he promptly offered to write in a new note book and the teacher gave in.
The following day, while the class was in session, the teacher said that she was very glad that Akhil found his class work at from another class . She was happy that all of them can write their examinations well in her subject but said that he can prepare well for the examinations.
All of a sudden there was an uproar as the boys left their seats and wandered around the class room pulling out books and note books from different places.
The teacher was astonished when they pulled out his notebooks from; under their chairs, from the teachers table, from other's book shelves, from the top of the cupboard and finally found his pouch from the bin. The students enjoyed the fun of fetching his books and piling it in his hands. The room reverberated with laughter and fun, while Akhil stood red faced wondering how his books had taken a walk all around the class room. The teacher smiled at the new discovery Akhil. One of them shouted from the far end,
"Mam, May be you don't know about Akhil, we all know him very well. He never finds his textbooks and note books in time, he leaves it where ever he sits."
"Akhil, how can you be so irresponsible?" She admonished him gently. All the while smiling and wondering at the child who looked perturbed by all the hue and cry. She called him to the dais of the classroom. Holding the pile of notebooks and textbooks in his hand he stood astonished probably at his own strewn things. May be he never realised until pointed out by his peers.
Finally the new teacher settled everyone back to their seats and addressed the class. "Akhil is very thankful that you helped him find all his books and pouch too. He wishes to thank you all."
Then she looked at Akhil, gently prompting him to speak. She realised she had never heard him speak aloud before.
He held his head high and said, "Thank you friends! I shall be more careful from today."
The class fell silent. The teacher noticed that the class felt ashamed of the pun. The awkward silence prolonged. She observed them silently; letting the moment sink into every one.
She spoke, "It is okay. School is where we learn to become responsible citizens of the world. These small incidents in school life teaches us big lessons, for us to reflect , and correct ourselves." They noded in agreement.
Akhil received a pat on his back that was an assurance and a support. He walked up to his shelf and neatly arranged his books and then returned to his seat.
"little men!" The teacher smiled at her class. The little men smiled at her.
