Also known in the New Testament as Elias, Elijah was an ancient prophet whose life and character is depicted in the Bible. Elijah spent many of his days at Mount Carmel and due to his hermitage nature; the Greek Church refers to Elijah as their Patron Saint of the Mountains. Mount Carmel (in Israel) reaches an elevation of approximately 1800 feet and is of enormous Biblical and historical significance. Elijah was also linked with the secret religious communal, the Sons of Prophets. Elijah is still remembered today when at Passover a chair is left empty for him and Jewish tradition tells that before the Messiah comes, Elijah will return. During ancient Biblical times, during his lifetime, Elijah stood up to many in power.
