What Does Byzantine Mean?
Blog Post by Suellen Ocean - May.17.2012 - 11:00 am
Byzantine means "characteristic of Byzantine." But what is Byzantine? Today, it is Istanbul Turkey but before that it was Constantinople and before that it was... you got it... Byzantine. And during the era of the great Byzantine Empire (5th and 6th centuries) certain styles were developed. There were fabrics, domes, arches, mosaics and marble veneer placed upon walls. A Christian culture of Biblical times from that era is also referred to as Byzantine. "Byzantine Romans" is also used, as is the expression, the "Roman Empire of Byzantium".
