Steven gives an overview of the book:

From their origins as the Brooklyn Atlantics in 1884, through their departure from their beloved borough in 1957, to their record-breaking popularity in sunny Los Angeles, the Dodgers baseball team has been an unstoppable force in professional baseball for well over a century. The franchise has captured a record 21 National League titles, won six World Series championships, and produced dozens of Hall-of-Famers. The Dodgers revolutionized the sports landscape with the signing of Jackie Robinson in 1947 and have boasted a list of players that reads like an all-time all-star team—from Walter Alston to Zack Wheat, Wee Willie Keeler to Pee Wee Reese, Dazzy Vance to Sandy Koufax, Duke Snider to Jeff Kent. The team’s two longtime homes—Brooklyn’s Ebbets Field and Los Angeles’ Dodger Stadium—stand out in the pantheon of great baseball palaces.   Dodgers Past &...

FRONT AND BACK DUSTCOVERS

The Dodgers are one of the most storied traditions in sports, but Dodgers Baseball Yesterday and Today by sports historian Steven Travers is unique above and beyond all previous efforts at chronicling the history of a franchise that starts in Brooklyn during the Civil War, and lives on in the glorious splendor of 21st Century Southern California.

Each chapter is devoted to a specific aspect of Dodgers baseball, with text and rare photographs book ending the lineage of the team, demonstrating stark contrast between the black-and-white image of old-time players; the development of the team, the position, the equipment, the stadium and the men who played and now play for the Dodgers. Here we have "Iron Joe" McGinnity, a Hall of Fame right-hander of the 1900s, on the same page with Brad Penny, a Dodger All-Star in 2007. Ned Hanlon, the skipper of the Brooklyn nine prior to World War I, is contrasted with Tom Lasorda, the Hollywood-savvy Los Angeles skipper of the 1970s, 1980s and '90s.
