Steven gives an overview of the book:

"Concerning a Gambit of Fraternity" is the first published short story of "the Vanguard," a magical secret society interested in boosting the influence of magic in the world. While I refer to it as my "two guys walk into a bar" story, it's the introduction to a world where magic may soon be the guiding paradigm over reality. This story presents three different views and approaches to magic and how they interact. Look for two more "Vanguard" short stories in the DAW anthologies The Dimension Next Door (July 2008) and Gamer Fantastic (2009). The author currently works on a Vanguard novel on spec.
