OK, it's kind of a stretch, but I've always though of presidential press secretaries as writers of a sort; well, interpreters at least. The good ones, like good writers, you believe. The others, well . . .
I'm not sure what kind of press secretary James Brady was for Reagan, but he was shot in the head on March 30, 1981 in John Hnckley Jr.'s assassination attempt of Reagan, and left partially paralyzed.
But not rendered ineffective. He and his wife Sarah founded the Brady Campaign for Gun Violence Control, which has been behind some important hand gun control legislation. In 1996 President Clinton awarded James Brady the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Which makes it particularly depressing that the Brady Campaign for Gun Violence Control has found it necessary to give President Obama an ``F.''
``The President’s concessions to the `guns anywhere' mentality of the gun lobby and lack of leadership for common-sense gun laws has earned him a grade of `F,' '' the Brady Campaign writes on its website.
``President Obama signed legislation letting people carry concealed weapons in national parks . . . adopted the gun lobby’s empty rhetoric about just `enforcing the laws on the books' . . . muzzled Cabinet members who expressed support for stronger gun laws.
``. . . the White House voiced no objection to people carrying guns near Presidential events and his White House staff removed statements from the White House website that declared support for gun violence prevention laws.''
Since James Brady was shot while serving as White House press secretary, that last paragraph is particularly meaningful – and painful.
Obama'a reasoning is obvious. The last thing he needs is more harassment from the Right. So let it slide. Sign the bill or don't sign the bill, whatever doesn't ruffle the gun lobby. Let's not detract from more pressing issues.
Politics is a lousy business.
If you want to get something done here, you ignore or stiff that issue over there.
Meanwhie, enjoy your vacation in Yosemite or Yellowstone and hope the guy playing loud music and skulking in the next campsite isn't packing.
And hope the Bradys hang in there.
