As one takes in the incredible amount of information spewed out by the internet, now even more revelations from Wiki-leak, just confirms to me more and more that we do indeed live in an Age of Apocalyptic Stupidity. Look at all those huge conflicts waiting in the wings. China versus Japan or USA, Iran versus Israel and/or USA, the Christian World versus Islam, India versus Pakistan. Russia versus Europe. So many conflicts waiting. Yet all of these countries are doing business! They all trade with each other. Terrorists trade with their enemies - and the democracies trade with the tyrannies. The leaders of all the governments and their cronies have off shore accounts - nesteggs that collectively add up to trillions. Look at the late PLO leader - he stashed away billions. The Taliban leadership make money from opium and stuff the proceeds in Dubai. The Princes of Saudi Arabia finance the terrorists and at the same time have dinner with the Western leaders. Everyone is duplicitous and on the take. Both Afghanistan and Iraq are financial blackholes. Business is good for the cheats. Name one country in which there is a leader who has not been involved in a financial case - either in office or out. Name one. Diplomacy and organized crime are bed fellows. What does that leave? That leaves all the schmucks like us - who vote and prop up corruption. We even salute flags and sing national hymns. We fight in battles and die. For what? There are no real enemies - we are all led by idiots who have used the system of politics to further their own interests. Hence all this commotion over the Wiki-leaks - it has just exposed the system. Yet looking at this mess - and it is a mess - "rudderless" as they described Gordon Brown, where truth and the good are lost to horsetrading and extortion. China will bully the USA as the latter owes it trillions. The sovereignty of Taiwan - the political determination of Tibet, the interest of the Africans, Latin Americans -- all come second. The ice caps can melt - because the countries in the regions are more interested in the fossil fuels than the welfare of the planet. It is really a stupid age - and it saddens me that I have children who must suffer as a consequence. I used to think the Cold War was dangerous - but at least it was structured madness or stupidity - now we have absolute disorganised stupidity.
This is the greatest paradox - capitalism fuels revolutions - and revolutions fuel capitalism. What it really boils down to is territority. We are territorial - and as Robert Ardrey's central thesis (which was rather sensationalist) argued - we are aggressive - though it seems a lot of this has to do with culture, but we are also above all - just plain acquisitive. We are the Acquisitive Apes. All of the squabbles and gossip revealed in the wiki-leaks are to do with acquisition - whether it be property or person.
