In 1962, when I was in the second grade, my aunt gave me a book that I have always felt changed my life. It was Relativity for the Million, which explained the basic concepts of Einstein's Special theory in clear and thankfully nonmathematical terms. The author was Martin Gardner, and I have been a fan ever since. He also wrote marvelous and funny short stories on mathematical topics, collected in a book which I can't find but have never forgotten. RIP Mr. Gardner. The world will miss your talent, understanding, and humor.
