It could be fairly said that I have a preoccupation of sorts with smart beautiful funny women in difficult relationships with brilliant but unstable men. I wrote about one (Lena) in my novel The Marriage of True Minds. I married (and got divorced from) one.
But before either, there was Kate in my play The Ghost Writer. Kate like Lena is an attorney with a troubled romantic life. Like Lena, she provides the emotional center of the story. And like Lena, her revelation is key to the story’s resolution.
Watching a rehearsal of the play at Theater11 yesterday, I realized how strong the parallel was, and how it has run through my life for thirty years or more. It makes me wonder what the next evolution will be, and if she will be real or imagined, or both.
