The genesis of this novel

Thanks for asking about the genesis of this novel.Reaching back in time (1957) to when some readers might believe is somewhere in the Middle Ages, a distant relative of "Nike" did try to make an appearance - a too-broad satire on the secret defense missile industry. In those days if you had an interesting story idea and could write a decent letter, access to agents and even editors for your manuscript was actually possible. But satirizing something about which the public knew little, was highly classified to boot, and with the Cold War getting serious - was a literary endeavor doomed from the start. After a few months bouncing around in the literary establishment in New York, the manuscript returned to its final resting place in the closet. In 1985 what could be called a distant cousin with a slight resemblance to the 1957 manuscript tried to make the scene in response to President Reagan's "Star Wars" absurdity. This effort was correctly criticized as too immediately topical and didactic for most readers. Around 1990 I decided to take some of the important or unique genetic material from these earlier relatives and produce a hybrid, a long saga of broader theme and more "character driven" (as they say in the business), and with more drama and wit. Fifteen years of on and off research, writing and countless revisions produced "Nike," a novel of literary intent, I unabashedly maintain, and one even the author enjoys delving into occasionally, and where the characters seem to grow more fully formed with time - free of the writer's hand
