I got a thing about certain people's 15 minutes of fame. I also try to keep everything in perspective when it comes to this pop culture phenomenon of performers like Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, Paris Hilton, et all.
I try to keep it in perspective. I remember a cartoon parody in an underground publication in the 80's that Prince was really the Frankenstein monster of parts of Jimmi Hendrix and James Brown. People did not get Elvis. People did not get a young Frank Sinatra or a young Bing Crosby. People thought Jazz was a passing phase. I like to call it the "Parents Just Don't Understand Conundrum"
Granted. I just don't get Bieber. He looks like a kid who saw The Beatles, swooped his hair and got on YouTube. Lady Gaga is a Frankenstein Hybrid Monster of David Bowie, Annie Lennox, Madonna with used piano parts of Liberace and Elton John.
I don't even know where to begin with Paris Hilton. At least the others have some sort of discernable "Talent". I'm still trying to find hers outside of her being born the heir of places that give out free continental breakfast and soaps so small it is impossible to wash your hands with.
I'm weary about some people's 15 minutes. Sure it is fodder for the pop culture WTF mill.
That is until today where 15 minutes has become surprisingly dangerous. Enter Pastor Terry Jones.
First and foremost with all the lighthearted comedian love in the world I can muster from this...I feel so sorry for Monty Python member Terry Jones for this man existing.
On September 11th "Pastor" Jones has decided he wanted to do a Nuremberg rally on his property and burn copies of The Quran. He has just enough sociopath capacity to get onto YouTube and announce his intentions.
Enter the news media. It seems in the last six months anything with the words "Islam" or "Muslim" is being used as top news stories. Especially if it has anything to do with Xenophobic topics. I'm convinced there are editors in every major news market scouring Google with the quotes "Muslim Hate" or "Islamic Hate" and making it their top story.
Who can pass up a guy with a Porkchop mustache? Who mind you? Porkchop Mustache? Crazy Manifesto like church? Hitch Trailer with Xenophobic sign? As the kids in this new 24 hour news cycle would abbreviate: FTW!
Now this insane, bigoted man who used to work as a hotel manager (hurm. Paris Hilton?), who got kicked out of his church in Germany for being too extreme is now getting his grand 15 minutes. He has been blasted all over the news. So much so, that his book burning event has reached oversees to people who are now afraid this will kill our soldiers.
Here is your fifteen minutes, you Porkchop mustachioed sociopath. You now got the attention of General Petreus.
You can see the smug glee on his face from the MSNBC video today that he is finally being seen. He has a public platform. He is loving he can hold hostage other church leaders, government officials with the threat of causing severe damage to a couple of thousand soldiers hiding behind the skirts of God from his front yard that is in some serious need of attending to.
It must look that way from the last book burning event he held.
He cannot pronounce Muslim correctly. He has mentioned a former Green Beret who was not even stationed in Iraq or Afghanistan, that he bandies about to try to out top the concerns of General Petreaus. He never mentions his name. My first question would be "What is this Green Beret's Name?"
I already know the response: "It's none of my business". Still. I always like to see someone balls insane turn flush red and then make more stuff up.
He is having a hoot dang old good time with his 15 minutes.
A friend noted: It's exciting to watch such a rapacious example of irony unfold: The most vocal hater of the moment becomes the most hated.
This is how it happens. This is why this man is getting 15 minutes. His talent is being insane but just smart enough to know how to get the word out. Because in the minds of many? "It is exciting to watch" That is...until you realize it just might kill some people. Even with this for some it has now become the Friday Cliffhanger:
Will Pastor Terry Brown's Saturday Actions kill American soldiers in Iraq? Will he still throw his book burning? Will he get a new lawn afterwards? Will Monty Python's Terry Jones sue for his name? Next on "The Days of our Hate".
I already got a thing about certain people's 15 minutes. This one is a really dangerous 15 minutes. The side of me that says to expose people like this in the media is officially superseded with the wish that this man with the Porkchop mustache was never given the opportunity to stand on his front lawn with his beat up hitch and hateful sign.
I wish people treated him nicer once upon a time and he still had his hotel manager's job. I wish he did not have the brain capacity to know how to work YouTube.
I would officially rather have a million news stories of Justin Bieber's Hair than this. Because Bieber's Hair will probably never cause an American death backlash to our soldiers.
When I wish that any national story would push this guy out of the spotlight. Anything. Just so it no longer shows up before September 11th. I wish for it now. I also wish the adage of 24 hour news cycle memory kicks in really goddamn fast.
Then again, I wish a lot of things that never comes true.

15 minutes never last long...
Usually, I shy away from commenting on politics or intolerance of any kind because commenting may open a can of nasty worms -- but I have to agree with you. I wasn't surprised that this guy was eaten up with hatred. I was surprised that he had the temerity to show how hatred had consumed him.
