I said it last week when I read about Representative Doug Lamborn of Colorado and I will say it again: I get the feeling this man has been using the term tar baby way before the cameras got on him and he forgot they were there.
And Mr. Buchanan? Some "folks" did "Sort of take it as a slur" Know why? Because historically it *has been* Sorry Pat. You just can't feign ignorance given your age and your background of "Slips of the tongue".
We already sort of knew you are the kind of guys who do not think twice about using these term in the privacy of your own couch. I'm sure a lot of your contingents chuckled heartedly too, Pat and Doug. I'm almost certain Pat's contingency screamed the N word in joyous glee at the television with Pat giving Sharpton on camera the old "Boy Routine"
The tragedy: After the killings in Oslo, the hatred of a supposed church loving New York politician standing in the middle of the floor against gay marriage, A student not given valedictorian status and giving the award to someone not African American because "It would be a holy mess" to Arizona and their "Show me your ID to prove you are not an illegal" to the hate that came out of Tracy Morgan's mouth...I don't think any of this is going to stop.
Any of it. Bigotry, racism, homophobia and basic xenophobia will never leave in the current climate of the world. Sorry for sounding so dismal, but it is dismal times.
Who do we blame? Do we blame a horrible economy and unemployment (one of the things history wise that helped fuel the hate of War World Two)? Do we blame an education system, where most people spell hate "H8", and could not spell the world language unless it had a red mark underneath it to right click to correctness?
Do we blame Republicans and conservatives like Karl Rove for taking language and turning it on itself so much that any word can be mangled into something that people can use with strange "New Meaning". Do we blame Democrats and liberals for making the world so politically PC once upon a time that this is the ultimate backwash to it?
Do we blame our media for the seeming barrage of sensationalist news that holds this narrative: "Republicans are racist yet closeted and Democrats are more inclined to send a hooker their private parts on Twitter?" Do we blame reality television for a climate so filled with sensationalism that the Pat/Al Video has gone viral in the most horrible of ways?
Do we blame our entertainers for this? Our entertainers from Lenny Bruce who said It is not the words that are hateful and it was okay to use them...to Bill Cosby telling us it is African Americans fault and we must take responsibility for our actions to get respect....to Bill Maher rebelling against the times when his show aired and naming it"Politically Incorrect" (where we can now watch a Republican, Democrat and Tea Party member argue for about 30 or so minutes with Bill throwing gas on that fire, never agreeing on anything turning into the loudest one taking over...and waiting for the special guest to break that up to make it STOP and talk about the movie they are in)?
Do we blame Danny Glover for Mel Gibson or reverse? Do we blame The Baldwin Brothers? Should we call it a Floor Wax or a Desert Topping?
I personally blame *humans*. It's the part of us that will always be there: A distinctive fear of the unknown and of others. For many this sort of language against others makes them feel stronger, superior, and far better than the person you are talking about.
A news story in the LA Times around the Tar Baby Incident, had a very unfortunate homeless African American woman (who was apparently on a lot of Meth) attack a woman with a stroller, pull the baby out of its stroller and threw the child against a truck. She told police that she wanted to kill the child to *eat it* A store owner would not even *help the woman whose child was attacked* according to the article.
The comments on this thread was one from a man from Hawaii. He did not go where everyone went (How can someone not help a woman with a baby in a stroller?). He said without any sort of humor involved (after looking at his Facebook) "Just your Typical Black Woman"
This is how he feels about black women. Including Maya Angelou, Harriet Tubman, Queen Latifa and any random black woman going about her daily life of working, attending concerts and making dinner. Apparently to this man: A dinner of "Baby Stew with a side of Meth Salad".
After numerous called him out in a pretty unpleasant way, he responded "I just call it like I see it"
Sometimes I wish I could see through the eyes of people who think like this. A world filled with flesh eating black women roaming the streets where he lives. Him standing in line at a supermarket and instead of seeing Nutrigrain and a gallon of milk in the black woman's cart he sees his own arm. Maybe he mistook her saying to the checkout person "Paper and plastic please" with "YOUR EYE LOOKS DELICIOUS!"
No apology. Just like Pat, and possibly begrudgingly like Doug. He honestly thinks all black women use crystal meth and will eat a baby, as I'm sure these two men think it is perfectly fine to refer to our President as someone's "Boy" or use the term Tar Baby.
This is the world we live in. Maybe we celebrate an entire week for sharks because they are the assholes of the sea. We as humans are the assholes on land and sharks and humans have a history of eating each other.
It's horrible human nature. Until we remove that part of the brain from humans...it will never go away. *Some just work more with that part of the brain than others.*
This Colorado Representative would have never been elected if more "Different Thinking" Voters got up and voted. So sure...an apology is great. But someone voted this man in. People consider Pat a leader. It would also entail an apology from the contingent who voted him in too. And that is a lot of apologies to our President from a lot of people who probably did not vote for him in the first place...sitting in front of the television cheering and chuckling with these men.
I'm finding apologies to be an act of futility. They say it and they don't mean it. The object is to not vote for these people in office to represent this country. And that would mean volunteering at your local political office, giving money to the opposing candidate or running yourself. Or at least getting up and voting every election and not just the big ones.
That is how we change the world. Not by begging for an apology. Let them think the way they do. Just vote them out of office.
Hopefully the current climate of the world will get other people who do not run on fear out to the polls the next time around.
For our Colorado Rep, I'm hoping this guy puts away his Uncle Remus books for reference to disagreeing with our President and return his "In-House Couch Potato Xenophobia" where it belongs: Back on the couch. For Mr. Buchanan: Stay classy as always, tiger.
For my Hawaii Native posting on LA Times: I hope to one day meet you and lick my lips at you. You look great.
You would look even better on a bun with a side of Meth Salad.
