Matt Rees is one of my favorite writers because he has the courage and grace and talent to write novels from the Arab point of view. If the Palestinians were prone to reading Western style novels, which I understand they are not, he might be in a bit of trouble in the manner of Salman Rushdie. Matt's likeable protagonist, school teacher/detective Omar Yusef reveals the human foibles of this part of the world. By the way, if people are wondering why the Christian Arabs are leaving Palestine by the droves, they only have to read Matt Rees novels. Here is a hint - it has little to do with the Israelis. Unlike Matt, I write Middle East thrillers from the Israeli point of view, and my protagonist has an Iranian father. I also can relax, knowing I have few if any readers in Iran. My favorite writers are Graham Green, Salman Rushdie, John La Carre, and now Matt Beynon Rees.
