And whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted of him, and in the hereafter, he will be one of the losers.
On a visit to Nazareth in 2010, I took a photo of this banner. I was appalled by the outright disrespect to all non-Muslims. Now, after a few years to think about it, I am laughing out loud. LOSERS! That is what these Muslims in Nazareth are calling all Jews and Christians. No euphemism, no politically correct statement, just plain old English “losers.” I understand the situation behind this in-your-face banner was a long dispute between the Christian Arabs of Nazareth and the Muslim Arabs of Nazareth. The mosque people wanted to construct a building that would tower over the Christian Basilica that can be seen in the background. (The Basilica commemorates the spot where the angel Gabriel spoke to Mary and announced the coming birth of Jesus. and is a huge tourist draw.) In the heated dispute that followed, they eventually went to court. The ruling (by an Israeli judge) came out in favor of the Christians. I’m in awe of the almost childlike retaliation of the mosque people. Those of you who can read Arabic will probably say that the word translated “loser” is better translated “lost.” Meaning all who do not follow Islam are theologically lost. Be that as it may, I still like the use of the word loser. It is so contemporary, and so funny.
