What Amazon is doing is a carefully and cleverly structured cabal in an attempt to control the industry through their vast resources as a development of their own megalomania. With the demise of more and more retailers, small publishers, et al, Amazon will be the only place to get one's work into "print." (They will probably buy out or blow out the likes of Ingram, etc.) Using Kindle as their distribution platform, they will essentially force everyone to have to go through them to get their work out into the readersphere (sic). Little by little they are seeking to take over the business models of various venues empowering themselves to eventually become the only publisher of note extant, further growing their domination. When any publisher of lesser thrust attempts to put a book on the "shelves," they will have to, in one way or another, go through the Byzantine web of Amazon's oligarchic structure. In time, any book of good, bad, or mediocre worth will have no choice but to follow along. Amazon will then have complete control of pricing, distribution, and unfortunately for creative minds, the authority to tell people what to read... more dumbing down. Along with that will come the increased difficulty for an independent to determine their own marketing strategies coupled with the ominous financial onus of actually getting a work into print and out to the market—without Amazon's "blessings." What Amazon is seeking to do is to become the "uber alles" of the public and corporate intellect as an extension of their authoritarian mercenary benevolence. Beware!
