I began writing for the Associated Press. The late (and definitely great) Tony Hillerman got me the job when I was his journalism student. Later UPI national radio editor, then CBS News and CBS Sports where I won three network Emmys. My passport has a lot strange stamps from strange places at even stranger times. I was one of the first Americans legally into Cuba. I was in Egypt 10 days before Sadat was assassinated; in Poland when martial law was declared; on the Thai-Burma boarder on the eve of the 8888 Uprising against the generals. Rather than some boring memoir, I decided to use some of that to write my first thriller.
