I discovered my favorite poem in high school French class: Déjeuner du matin by Jacques Prévert. I love the simplicity of this poem. I don't need to rely on a dictionary to read it, and the flowery language that characterizes most poems is completely stripped away so the story can shine through on its own. The raw emotion that is evoked in this poem with just a few simple lines leaves me breathless, and the first few times I read it, I cried along with the narrator. It reminds me of the beauty of storytelling; language is not the key to impacting your readers, it's the story that truly matters.
