Samuel Cole is a writer, designer, and photographer with strong ties to Minnesota’s creative community.
Cole primarily focuses on writing short-shorts and short stories. His work has appeared (or is forthcoming) in national journals, reviews, magazines, and ezine publications. Be sure to check out his published works page.
Cole’s passion for telling stories started as a young boy. Many of his dearest friends were imaginary: Vinga, Vonga, Ishi, and Oshi in particular. In middle school and high school, he won top awards in journalism and creative writing. In college, he studied english, music, and sociology, temporarily setting fiction writing aside.
In 2001, Cole began scrapbooking full time, creating layouts and workshop materials for various design teams/companies throughout the United States. Scrapbooking brought Samuel back to his roots as a storyteller, allowing him to combine photography with the written word. He was runner up in the 2006 Creating Keepsakes writing contest, and was a featured writer in Scrapbooks, Etc. in June 2007
Originally from Verndale, MN, Cole now lives in Woodbury, MN. His favorite hobbies include running, BODYSTEP & BODYATTACK, attending and critiquing movies, watching football (go Vikings), hanging with friends, and, of course, writing stories. He is an avid reader: somewhere around the house, seventeen books are currently open.
Some of Cole’s favorite books include, but are not limited to: Kite Runner (recently, he was gifted a first edition), Memoirs of a Geisha, Wicked, Sudden Fiction, New Sudden Fiction, Olive Kitteridge, Water for Elephants, Joy Luck Club, Running with Scissors, Dry, Huge, Sing Them Home, Anne of Green Gables, Pride and Prejudice, Brokeback Mountain, and My Abandonment.
Most of Cole’s fiction explores contemporary middle class American life in lucid tones of melancholy, poetry, and surprising wonder. His best friend Mark calls it “Coleian”.
Friends and colleagues often describe Sam like this: “There’s funny. There’s hip. There’s kind. There’s brilliant. There’s creative. There’s energy. There’s focus. There’s Sam”. Sam concurs.
