THE DAILY SAM: WIFFLE BALL WORLD SERIES

Sun Valley, Idaho—The Wiffle Ball world was forever changed by a game this past Saturday in Sun Valley, Idaho. The game was held in conjunction with a Rock Bottom Remainders concert at a fund raiser for the Ketchum, Idaho YMCA. Some of the greatest players in the game assembled in the backyard of a house rented by Dave “Lefty” Barry. Actually, about half of the wiffle ball field was in the fairway of a golf course that runs by the house, which added a certain extra excitement to the game. Among the legends who took the field that day:

Erasmo “The Monk” Paulo

Dave “Mr. I Can Also Bat Righty Showoff” Barry

Ridley “The Brain” Pearson

Scott “The Lawyer” Turow

Dave’s cousin-in-law Ron, better known “The Minneapolis Kid”

Page “Blondie” Pearson

Story “The Arm” Pearson

Sophie “Legs” Barry

The game went on for inning after inning after inning, when suddenly we realized no one was keeping score—a major oversight on our part. My personal highlight was the brilliant slide I made into second in the twenty-third inning. However, several people pointed out that the slide was completely unnecessary, as no one was covering the base and no attempt was being made to get me out. I beg to differ.

Although the other team was scoring more runs, I think we won. Of course ultimately, it doesn’t really matter who won or lost. What really matters is whether or not we were taking steroids. And it remains to be seen who will get into October’s 13th Annual Wiffle Ball World Series at Sherwood Yards in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.
