Tonight I will be attending the13th Annual San Francisco Library Laureates Dinner, the big fund raiser for our fair city’s wonderful library system. The theme is “Celebrating the Theory of Evolution,” as library boosters mingle with thirty-five authors to raise a glass and toast the bicentennial of Charles Darwin’s birth and the 150th anniversary of the publication of On the Origin of Species. The evening will begin with a reception in the Main Library’s atrium, and then we will be seated at tables set amid the stacks and served an exquisite meal (I’m hoping) catered by Paula LeDuc. One of the things I enjoy about this event is that I get to eat and drink in the library—in fact, I am positively encouraged to do so. Because of the theme I am supposed to dress as my “most highly evolved self.” Others will no doubt be cleverer, but for me this means putting on a nice shirt, pair of slacks, and more or less matching jacket. That is me at my most evolved.

Congratulations
Have fun, and don't let the bored, uninteresting and uninterested donors bore you. Not all of them are like this, but I was surprised to find the money at my table only interested in themselves.
The event
I guess I have been lucky--I've been a few years running and have had good experiences.
