Today we are going to focus on the question, is there a God? But before I get to that, I want to report on what happened at this past Sunday’s Bay to Breaker’s in San Francisco. Bay to Breakers is an annual footrace that starts at the northeast end of the downtown area a few blocks from the Embarcadero (near the bay and near where I work) and runs west through the city to finish at the Great Highway and near the Pacific Ocean—hence the name. In addition to serious runners, walkers, and wheel chair contestants, there are lots of revelers. It’s a West Coast Mardi Gras, combining wholesome outdoor exercise with costumes, drinking, and full frontal nudity.
The best part of Bay to Breakers are the people who do Breakers to Bay, running the entire course backwards dressed as salmon swimming upstream to spawn. And the answer is, as long as San Francisco keeps doing silly stuff like this, I know there is a God.
