As the credits begin to role on California’s Governator Schwarzenegger era, it is time for our great state (World’s seventh largest economy! The nation’s leading source of bad mortgages!) to consider who will be our next actor-governor. Some of the leading contenders, according to Robert Cambra and me, include:
Hugh Laurie: The leading Democratic candidate is a huge advocate of health reform. Laurie has never held public office, but then, that didn’t stop Schwarzenegger or Reagan. Anyhow, Laurie has appeared on Saturday Night Live and is a medical genius, so we think he has the requisite experience.
Clint Eastwood: The leading Republican candidate has already been mayor of Carmel, which is pretty much the same thing as being governor, and has directed Oscar winning films, which is much harder.
Sonny Bono: Sonny was an actual congressperson and an actor. We think he has a great shot, and that being dead might actually improve his effectiveness in Sacramento.
But hold on—maybe it’s time for California to have a woman in the top spot. I don’t think we ever have, and I am too lazy to look it up. How about Jennifer Aniston and Angelina Joli? This political catfight would be so good for the tabloid industry, which has been suffering of late.
