I recently completed the manuscript of my first novel, a comedy-mystery called Dog Tired, with dreams of landing an agent and getting published. Here’s what it’s about:
Laid off after her call center job gets transferred to the Philippines, Lucinda Montgomery turns to her long-time live-in boyfriend, Doug, for emotional and financial support only to discover he’s gambled away her life’s savings and may be sleeping with the realtor trying to sell their home before the bank forecloses. The insecure and compulsive Lucinda musters her last ounce of self-esteem and leaves Doug on her 40th birthday. She lands a job as a substitute teacher in an overcrowded, cockroach-infested school and moves in with JoLynn, a young widow with a penchant for bearded men and tabloids who took in a roommate to help pay the bills after her investments took a beating in the stock market crash. When a student’s dog goes missing, Lucinda is drawn into the tapestry of Lawndale, Florida in ways she never imagined – dog sitting for retired circus people, spying on pierced and tattooed Goths, interviewing elderly nudists, and seeking counsel from Madame Sofia, the neighborhood psychic. Will she find a new life and love among her eccentric neighbors or will her charming but troubled ex win her back? And when more and more Lawndale dogs go missing, will Lucinda have what it takes to solve the mystery?
