A baker's dozen of reflections on the literary art

Inspiration is wonderful when it happens, but the writer must develop an approach for the rest of the time... The wait is simply too long. Leonard Bernstein

I was working on the proof of one of my poems all the morning, and took out a comma. In the afternoon I put it back again. Oscar Wilde

It took me fifteen years to discover that I had no talent for writing, but I couldn't give it up because by that time I was too famous. Robert Benchley

Read over your compositions, and wherever you meet with a passage which you think is particularly fine, strike it out. Samuel Johnson

Some editors are failed writers, but so are most writers. T S Eliot

Why do writers write? Because it isn't there. Thomas Berger

Writing is a socially acceptable form of schizophrenia. E L Doctorow

It is necessary to write, if the days are not to slip emptily by. How else, indeed, to clap the net over the butterfly of the moment? For the moment passes, it is forgotten; the mood is gone; life itself is gone. That is where the writer scores over his fellows:  he catches the changes of his mind on the hop. Vita Sackville-West

I'm not a very good writer, but I'm an excellent rewriter. James Michener

The wastebasket is a writer's best friend. Isaac Bashevis Singer

Don't tell me the moon is shining; show me the glint of light on broken glass. Anton Chekhov

No passion in the world is equal to the passion to alter someone else's draft. H G Wells

Writers should be read, but neither seen nor heard.   Daphne du Maurier

love these!

Especially Wilde's. People underestimate the power of punctuation (its presence or its absence)...

Evie, yes,

I see your point! I'm still getting to grips with it after some decades of writing. It's particularly difficult to get right in a poem. Sometimes it can entriely alter the meaning if you don't listen carefully, even in ordinary prose.

"I see your POINT."

Rosy, did you do that on purpose?! :)

You know me, Hunti

Point has obviously been taken! There are days when I'm up to my ears in corn.

Thanks for this, Rosy!

The Berger made me laugh out loud.

The thing is, Cheryl,

what's real and the truth often slips through the interstices of the fabric of everyday life without the author or poet's sixth sense.

Excellent Selection!

Benchley is a favorite. Here is one of mine:

"Writing costs me nothing. Not writing costs me everything."

A bit dramatic but it has a wring to it.

You have such charm, Ryoma. I know

you're not stuck for a chuckle in your house. I bet Gina has you in stitches all day long!

BTW, I drive a Suzuki Swift. Any connection?

Comment Bubble Tip

LOL!

I've said many times that if I die before my time, it'll be because Gina will make me laugh to death! LOL!

You know Rosy, keep making lovely compliments like that and you may have a new best friend! LOL! Thank you for being so kind, and I hope you will accept a sincere compliment back when I say how charming you are too. :)

Suzuki Swift? Hmmm, if your car takes a long time to warm up in the mornings, is slightly overweight, only has vegetarian fuel, doesn't react well to alcohol or caffeine and has a distinct aversion to work, then we may be *very* closely related. Possibly even twins! Apart from that I don't think there will be, Suzuki is a bit like Smith is in the UK or Jones in Wales. :)

That's one Agatha Christie

That's one Agatha Christie never thought of! (I think.)
