THE SHEEP AND THE GOATS, Book Two of the Berkeley Trilogy 1799 - 1811 (The story of Mary Cole, 5th Countess of Berkeley 1767 - 1844) is due for release in 2013 and JERICHO ROSE, my second volume of poetry, in 2014. These are poems of exile and rebirth, told through the eyes of several New Testament characters. The title piece is a long prose poem related by Mary, the Mother of Jesus, as she struggles to reconcile the human and divine nature of her mysterious child. The Gospel tells us that 'Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart' and I've tried to capture a certain reflective wisdom as she begins to piece the jigsaw together. The Jericho rose, or Resurrection plant, is a bit of dry, unattractive tumbleweed blown hither and thither about the desert. When it reaches an oasis, it begins to blossom within minutes and within hours has become a viridescent green. The biblical promise that 'the desert shall blossom as the rose' probably references this plant rather than the species we tend to imagine. It evokes images of craving thirst and living water. THE TWAIN, Poems of Earth and Ether, my first book of poetry, was published in 2012. Some are humorous, some meditative, some sad, some otherworldly. All, I hope, have echoes beyond their immediate context. Also published in 2012 was THE MUSTARD SEED, a children's play/story about Mary Jones, the little Welsh girl of Georgian times whose courage and determination laid the foundations of what is now the worldwide Bible Society. ENTERTAINING ANGELS, a novel of 20th century Britain, concerns a dysfunctional family wrestling with the aftermath of two World Wars under a dour but charismatic oracle, Sibyl. The book is written but is in abeyance and awaits an editing window!
