As soon as Tofu came home from school, he ran over to the calendar hanging on the wall. He looked at the date. It was March 5th, which meant it was only 60 days until the May TaeKwonDo Tournament and Belt Testing and 61 days before Tango-No-Sekku, which is the celebration of Boys’ Festival. On Boys’ Festival tall bamboo poles appear in front of all the houses where boys live. Flying at the top of each pole is a carp banner, a Koi-nobori, for each boy in the household. The symbol of the carp is selected because the carp is a fish so strong and brave that it can leap a waterfall. Parents hope that their children will think of the carp and be brave whenever their virtues are tested. “Mama, Mama, it’s just two months until the May TaeKwonDo Tournament and Belt Testing. This year I’m going to win first place in the tournament and earn my green belt. I’m going to come home from school everyday and practice, practice, and practice,” he said all in one breath.
She smiled, and before she could say anything he ran to his bedroom.
Within a short time, Tofu’s friend Lee came over to practice with him. They went up into a little cubbyhole and there Tofu found the box with his TaeKwonDo uniform and his carp banner for Boys’ Festival.
First, he took out his TaeKwonDo uniform and then his carp banner. The carp banner was brightly colored, just like a rainbow. Since Tofu was the eldest son, he had the largest banner in his family. He put on his TaeKwonDo uniform and tied his orange belt around his waist.
“This testing, Lee, I am going to earn my green belt,” he said as he looked towards the carp banner. Pointing to his arm muscles, he said, “And, I am going to work very hard so that my virtues will grow and my banner will fly higher than it ever has.”“Is that where your virtues are?” asked Lee with surprise.“I always wondered where they were. Boy, we could work on our virtues together,” Lee said with great conviction.
Reading the Tofu Ling Stories
The books in the Tofu Ling Series are meant to be a read-to-me story and that is why the vocabulary is a higher level than the average children’s book. I believe that it is important that a higher vocabulary be modeled for children to cultivate their literary knowledge. As the child becomes familiar with the story it is hoped that they will be able to pick out words and phrases. Many times, parents and teachers stop reading to their children when they are able to read for themselves. I hope parents will continue to read to their children beyond the reader stage.
The story can be read over several sittings and time can be used to ask questions about the story and the characters. Parents and teachers can pose questions asking the child to suggest what might happen next in the story. Some children have trouble making the leap to chapter books because they are used to having a story told in a 15 minute time period. Hopefully, by experiencing a book over several days they will understand the gratification of anticipating the conclusion of a story.
Activities for Enriching and Enhancing the Story
The Activities for Enriching and Enhancing the Story section is designed to provide adults/parents with the tools that can extend the literature experience of Tofu Ling into different disciplines. School districts across the nation are setting increasingly higher learning standards for their students. Through proficiency tests or exit exams, school systems are measuring the students’ progress toward these learning objectives to determine if the students have obtained the necessary knowledge and skills that they are now expected to have learned. The quality-learning activities provided in ‘Activities for Enriching and Enhancing’ are an opportunity for children to practice these growing expectations of knowledge and skill. It is important that adults/parents remain involved in the learning process and help their children by supplementing their education with tools as this. As educators, we have found that a good student can answer the questions of who, what, when, where, and why in a story with accuracy; and, the exceptional student can take the ideas in a story and create something original and innovative. We hope that the Tofu Ling series and these activities help spark an interest in literature as well as other disciplines in order to lay a foundation for the good student and help jump-start the creativity and innovation for an excellent student.
It is our hope that these activities are used as a springboard that will stimulate original thinking and creativity in your child. We also hope these create the opportunity for the adult/parent to have fun and enjoy the experience with their child/children.
