THE RED SWEATER
Shit it’s 10:15 AM
If Alex were here, I would be asking him if he brought a lunch today. If he did I’d try to inspirer him to go out to lunch, which was not a difficult task. Today I might have the chance ask Valerie if she wants to go to lunch today. More chats popped up about the Virus and if I could see the building on fire on Michigan Avenue.
Steve worked in Des Plaines and chatted about the National Guard moving Barricades around O’Hare Airport and every main street leading in and out of the airport. He typed that - the National Guard had even blocked highway leading into the airport. I couldn’t respond to this one as I started to type my message back to him, he sent another message-BRB. Shit I fucking hate typing. I got up to go wash my hands; I remember that this was the fourth time today. Valerie stood at the counter in the tiny kitchen area. She had a concerned look on her face as she sipped her coffee. I walked around and grabbed a cup for some water. Nothing could be more thoughtful as she looked over her should at me and smile as if to comfort me. I thought should ask her now. No, I thought I would look like a moron. Then I leaned against the counter across from her I said- would you like to have lunch today? Just then, I felt the front of my pants get wet she smile then laughed. I smile as I looked at know that I looked like a dork. I tossed the crumpled cup onto the counter and started laughing as she came around the counter with a handful of paper towels. I pulled my pant from my belt buckle away from my crouch. We laughed almost as if we were the only ones in the office, just then folded several paper towel and slide them down the front of my pant and said that should impressed the ladies. As she was walking away, I asked her- what about lunch. She looked over her should and said sure, but I hope that dries by lunchtime stud.
I could hear clearly now. The screams around me were come from every direction. Holy shit I can hear really well now, and I am hungry oh man I could eat a cow. Gosh! I want so bad to get up and go get a cheeseburger oh maybe Macrib from McDonalds. Hmm I smell something wonderful pass me every once in awhile; darn I can smell now also I wonder how long I’ve been laying here.
Back at my desk 11:30
I wrote my name on a thin strip of paper about one eighth by one inch in width. I had just bought a brand new pen yesterday at Pens Plus. It was a Parker, black and silver push pen. I love this pen. I pulled a one and an eight strip of clear tape from the dispenser then placed the piece of paper with my name facing down in the center of the tape. I admired my work and thought; no one would dare steal my trusty pen now. I glanced over at my cell phone on the corner of my desk it was flashing I had a voice message, I pulled it close to my face and seen it was from Alex. 11:15 the call had come in and missed. I stared at it for a second, thinking what is up maybe he had called to let me know that we were still on for tonight. Hi, a voice from behind me said, I turned and there she stood in her black slack and red sweater. The boots she wore where black and made her about an inch taller than me. She bent over with the folder in her hands. Then asked me to sign the two proofs inside, she smiled and tilted her head. I remember struggling to keep my eyes from straying to her neckline. I signed the proofs and then she signed them and smiled. Ok, she said-are you ready for lunch yet or did you wanted to wait and go at 12:30. I respond with- sure uh yeah ok. She smiled and said so which is it now or wait until 12:30. Oh uh 12:30 sounds great to me. She replied, ok I’ll see you at my desk at 12:30 then bye. I looked down at my crouch and noticed that they were not completely dry yet, but who care at this point. I reached into them and pulled out the wade of paper towels the Valerie had placed there. Looking back at my computer screen, I seen I only had twenty minutes before 12:30. My cell phone now had several messages waiting for me to listen to which I ignored, because of timing. I heard helicopter and several types of sirens. My AOL had twenty or more chats popping up. Many started with - leave work get out of the city. But I couldn’t miss lunch with my future wife; Valerie was everything I wanted in a woman, smart, beautiful and built like Jenifer Lopez. I carried myself to the bathroom as I searched the office for others, half had left and the other half were trying hard to look busy just in-case the owner walked by. The bathroom was freezing holy shit I said as the piss hit the urinal I starred at the tiny words written in-front of me- if your reading this your to close to the wall. What the fuck does that mean I thought and who has time to write or even brings a pen in the bathroom to write some stupid message. I washed my hands this would make the tenth time. I had a rule to never wash my hands more than ten times. I really didn’t want to become one of those obsessive-compulsive characters walking around doing things three times in a row. Shit I thought about the three times thing lights on, lights off, lights on, lights off, wax on, wax off. I moved through the office halls, my pants had dried as I pass Sophie’s desk she started to cry on the phone. More sound from the city outside came through the walls of the office. Finally, at Valerie’s desk she was not there so I sat in a chair she had sitting in the corner for visitors. Her desk is had pictures of friend and small trinket, probably gifts from friend and family.
Wow, someone just stepped on me. What the fuck going on, why is no one trying to help me? So let’s do some inventory on my situation: I’m lying some on the streets of Chicago, I can hear and smell everything. I cannot feel anything but I can move. I am just not sure I want to, I still cannot see. Oh yeah, I’m starving! I mean a hunger like a thousand biggest losers running up a fucking hill. Ok I am just going to open my eye, there I think they’re opened still nothing, this is so strange instead of seeing blackness all I see is white. Growl, hum growl ummmmed, shit I cannot form words. Wait, what was that. Someone is standing right next to me. Oh man, the person smell good I mean like a cheeseburger, no a Philly cheese sandwich with seasoned fries.
